Whether you’re flying solo or travelling with a partner, bringing sex toys on your holidays can make a good holiday great! We believe that it is possible to travel with your sex toys without hassle and that it’s well worth taking them abroad with you for some overseas fun.

Pack your sex toy in a way that makes it easily identifiable: if you still have your product packaging, use it, or attach a note to it. As a result of doing this, when a security guard is going through your bag they will immediately know what your sex toy is and spare you the awkward questions that you would rather not answer in front of your fellow holidaymakers!

Remove the batteries from your toy, or ensure that it is charged if it is rechargeable

In July 2014, a new rule was introduced that states if an electronic device in carry-on baggage does not turn on at the security gate, it will not be allowed on the aircraft. This is to combat terrorism threats and these precautions are currently being taken at all UK airports. If you are flying this summer, ensure that you pack your charger and keep it handy in the event that you are asked to prove that it works. British Airways has warned that devices may also be checked at the boarding gate. Be prepared – pack your sex toys away in your hold/checked baggage if possible to avoid any problems. If you are not checking in any hold baggage, just make sure that you give your toys a full charge before leaving home, and charge them again before you leave your hotel.

Removing batteries from battery-powered toys ensures that they can’t switch on accidentally when your bags are being handled or placed in the overhead bin. Lubricants and lotions: keep them small and properly seal them

All liquid containers in carry-on bags must be 100ml or less. Our bottles of YES Organic lubricants come in handy 100ml/80ml sizes. Keep in mind that it’s the size of the bottle and not how much liquid remains that matters. You are allowed a maximum of 10 containers per person and aerosol containers are not allowed to fly.

Keep toy size in mind and put them in checked baggage if possible

Current UK luggage restrictions state that tools in carry-on baggage must be under 6cm and we assume vibrators could fall under the “tools” umbrella, so keep your toys small. Also, anything that can be misconstrued as a weapon (such as handcuffs or whips) is likely to be removed during a security screening of your hand luggage so consider using scarves and ties as alternatives for bondage.

As for vibrators, unless they exceed the length restrictions, they will not get confiscated. Smaller, discreet vibrators won’t be as embarrassing if they get pulled out of your bag and are less likely to be a hassle to travel with. Some even look like a lipstick so are easy to slip into your bag and may not be noticed if your hand luggage is searched.

If a bag-handler questions the contents of your luggage, calmly explain that the item of concern is a sex toy

Stating outright what your sex toy is can stop an awkward situation from quickly escalating into a perceived potential security threat – something you do not want happening! Although this might seem like the more embarrassing option, saying calmly and discreetly to the bag handler will spare you the potential for humiliation on a much bigger scale!

If you feel like you are being harassed or singled out because of your carry-on toys, file a formal complaint. If you’re nervous about answering questions, you can always ask that your bag be searched in private. Keep it brief when answering all questions and use straightforward, clinical terms. And relax; security personnel have seen it all and have been trained to be sensitive in these matters. Once they realise what that curious little gadget is, they’ll most likely send you on your merry way.

If you are concerned about your sex toys being confiscated or handled, consider shipping them to your destination

Address the box to yourself, c/o your destination and require an adult signature upon delivery. Call ahead to inform the destination that you are expecting a package and ask them to hold it for your arrival. This is particularly advised if you have an expensive sex toy or one that exceeds length restrictions.

Pack it between other items

Rather than letting a sex toy roam freely in your carry-on or luggage, pack it in a carrying case or plastic bag and place it between layers of clothing. Should your bag get searched, this will buy you time to explain that you’re carrying a sex accessory and ask that your bag be searched in private if you wish to.

Beware of Country Laws

Sex toys are illegal in India, UAE and Saudi Arabia. In many parts of Africa and Asia and some parts of the Caribbean, it is illegal to be gay or lesbian – so please be aware of this and take precautions. Keep yourself informed about the laws as these are subject to change or can be enforced at any time.

If you are leaving the country, your destination may have laws against sexual items and forbidden items may be confiscated upon arrival. Always check the law of your destination country, be respectful of their culture and abide by the rules of the country that you will be visiting.
